Aim
This project is aiming at diverting children away from crime and
disorder as well as educating them around issues such as good
citizenship and awareness of HIV and AIDS. We have decided to
use football to tackle these issues in a way that will make
young people enjoy and can also be a rewarding experience. This
is a new project but we believe that we are going to score big
in the lives of many young children in Zimbabwe. We are working
towards bringing together many townships of Zimbabwe.
What is Township Soccer?
This term encompasses a number of informal varieties of
association football. This is not all about soccer but about
awareness, education as well as integrating with the community.
Children will not be asked to participate because of their
abilities but its open to all children as a way to keep them
busy and this will not discourage those that a not talented.
Township soccer will target young people that do not regularly
participate in club teams and offer them opportunity to interact
with others in their community. It will also help young people
that have talent by referring them to club teams and for
scholarships. Township soccer will be facilitated by coaches
that have vast experience of working with children. The coaches
will also be residents of that township or community, majority
of them are teachers with coaching qualifications.
Who runs it?
Zimbabwe township soccer will be run as a non profitable
project. Its executive members will be drawn from a range of
coaches, parents, sponsors and community members. However the
project is the brainstorm of Gladman Dimbiri, who is based in
the United Kingdom. He is a soccer coach, father and has been a
sponsor for many soccer projects in Zimbabwean communities in
the past. He is also the Director of Maningi grassroots soccer
project.
