Interview

Let’s hear abut soccer through the eyes of Director of Maningi Fc (Mr Gladman Dimbiri) – by Goodwell Zunidza.

Zunidza: Good Afternoon Sir, My name is Goodwell Zunidza. I am the Chairman of the Zimbabwe Sports Writers Association and the Editor of Sunday mail Sports.

Director: Good Afternoon Sir.

Zunidza: I have heard a lot about your Team can you tell me about it?

Director: I don’t call it a team myself because it’s a project. This work goes well beyond just being a team.

Zunidza: I thought it was a team, Maybe you need to elaborate?

Director: Mr Zunidza, Soccer here in Zimbabwe has a long way to go. We can’t have proper soccer teams in a country before the sport itself have developed. How can you have orange juice if the oranges does not grow and rip? A lot of teams have tried but I think we all have failed in Zimbabwe.

Zunidza: What do you mean we have all failed when we have got teams like dynamos here in Zimbabwe?

Director: With due respect to all the work and resources that has been put in soccer. I believe we have done nothing great yet and we need to develop the sport that many people respect and love in the world. Grassroots football is what lacking in Zimbabwe.

Zunidza: I thought a lot of sponsors have done a lot of work in setting up grassroots football in Zimbabwe?

Director: I realise that a lot of people are still confused with the term grassroots. If you sponsor a tournament that’s not grassroots but talent identification. We need resources and structures to develop soccer everywhere in Zimbabwe. Look at our schools soccer programmes; to me it’s a joke. How can we have schools just doing soccer one term a year? All weak schools only do it a few weeks because they get knocked out quicker.

Zunidza: Where do you think the problem is at the moment?

Director: The problem I told you its Soccer development that is lacking. Most people will blame the Z.I.F.A but I believe the problem is major that not only ZIFA will tackle it. We all need to fight and the Government need to be consistent when it comes to assist the mother body because coming in and out will not be helpful. I believe the money and the brains are there in Zimbabwe to overcome this problem.

Zunidza: So what do you have to tell the Nation, Mr Dimbiri?

Director: Eric Cantona once said “You score two goals and you usually feel you could have done better. You score 3 goals and you usually feel you could have scored the fourth. That’s perfectionism. That’s what makes people progress in life. One day Zimbabwe will be a great soccer nation but--- but--- but--- We need to work hard. I would want to be speaking to you one-day attending world cup with Zimbabwe.

Zunidza: Any more last words?

Director: Thank you Mr Zunidza for your time. All I want is for any people who have got soccer at heart to contact me and make grassroots football a success.
